What Is An SPF Roofing SystemOverviewSpray Polyurethane Foam, commonly referred to as SPF, is an insulating closed cell plastic that is sprayed as a hot liquid and quickly expands to several times its original thickness creating a water tight roofing membrane. When applied to a roof with a sealant, it is referred to as an SPF ROOFING SYSTEM. It has been used as a roofing system since the 1960's, and is endeared by large businesses for its ability to save more than 30% annually on heating and cooling costs and effectively pay for itself within 5 years! Because it is a monolithic surface, it offers exceptional strength against winds and is considered hurricane proof. How It WorksThe SPF is produced by a chemical reaction when two liquid components are combined at the tip of a gun. The "A" component is an isocyanate, and the "B" component is a polyol resin that is typically mixed in equal parts. When the two parts are combined in the spray nozzle, they start a chemical reaction that creates the foam. Within seconds, the liquid is on the roof surface and has expanded to 30 times its original mass to form a solid closed cell foam surface that has adhered to the substrate. This monolithic surface is now wind proof, water proof and resilient to foot traffic. Its high R values (6.5-7) reduces the thermal load on the roof as well as the thermal shock which boosts the buildings overall energy efficiency. MaintenanceAt the time of installation, a coating is applied to the new SPF roof to protect it from the Sun's UV Rays. Virtually no maintenance is necessary, except to reapply the Silicone coating every 20 years. In the event that damage occurs to the roof, a Certified Spray Polyurethane Foam technician must perform repairs in order to keep the warranty in good standing. The 20 year warranty provided with our roofing systems are renewable, making this a permanent roofing system. Here is a short movie that explains SPF Roofing Systems and demonstrates installation.
