Maintaining your Spray Polyurethane Foam Roof (SPF) is relatively easy when you understand the componants that make up the roof as well as their function. HOW IT WORKS Spray foam roofs are virtually indestructible and resilent to all but one element, the Sun. More specifically, the Ultraviolet rays (U.V. rays) of the sun is what can damage the foam roof. For this reason, these roofing systems are installed with a protective layer added on top to protect it in the same way we use sunscreen to protect our skin. This top-layer may be made out of a simple acrylic, or durable silicone coating. Regardless of what type of roof top-coat you may have, keeping the surface clean will prolong the top-coat as well as help to maintain a nice appearance. This is easily accomplished with a pressure washer on a periodic and regular interval that depends on environmental conditions such as tree proximity and wind for example.
Regular cleaning of the roof will help to not only maintain the appearance of the product and increase its longevity, but it will also serve as an opportunity to inspect the roof for any cracks or damage. Small areas can be easily repaired with a white silicone product that is readily available at most hardware stores. If the top coat has become too thin or is peeling off, the sun will begin to damage the foam roof, leaving it looking yellow and brown resembling burnt toast. Eventually the foam will wear down to a level that no longer offers any protection from the elements, and the roof will leak water and thermal energy. For this reason it is critical to replace the top-coat prior to the end of the life of the top-coat.
